Weathered gneiss and mica schist. Poor, free-draining, uncompromising — the soil that makes a wine ring.
Primary rock is the oldest ground we farm: weathered gneiss and mica schist, formed long before anyone here thought about wine. It holds almost no water and even fewer nutrients.
That is precisely its value. The vine has to root deeply to find what it needs, and what reaches the grapes is concentrated. Wines from primary rock carry a saline, almost stony line and a clarity no cellar technique can manufacture.
