The estate

A family business, for generations.

Ten hectares on the edge of two wine regions. Every task in the vineyard and in the cellar we do ourselves — that is not a marketing line, simply the size of the place.

Where the name comes from

„Drozze" is not an invention but an old spelling of our village. Droß was first mentioned in a document in 1135, and the name of our estate goes back to that origin.

The castle that reappears as a line drawing on our labels stands barely two hundred metres from the cellar. Anyone picking up one of our bottles is also holding a piece of the village skyline.

In the vineyard

Fewer grapes, better grapes.

We take work off the vine as early as summer: careful canopy management reduces the crop so that what remains gets more.

Everything is picked by hand. It is the only way to bring genuinely healthy fruit into the cellar — a machine cannot decide which bunch stays on the vine.

The Pannonian climate gives us ripeness, the cool winds off the Waldviertel give us freshness. The wide swing between day and night temperatures is why our wines never turn broad despite that ripeness.

The Schwanzelberger family in the vaulted cellar

Three generations, one cellar.

An estate this size only works if everyone lends a hand. At harvest the whole family is out in the vines, and the same goes for bottling.

That is also why we prefer to show visitors around the cellar ourselves. There is nobody we could delegate it to — and nobody who would rather.
